Chapter 3:A Caucus Race and a Long Tale

Summary:

Alice and other animals arrive safe on the shore but all of them are wet, so they think of a way to get dry. The Mouse invites everyone to sit down and listen to the driest story he knows but after he finishes narrating the story, Alice and the animals are still wet. The Dodo suggests the Caucus race is the best way of getting dry. After finishing the race, the Dodo announces that all of them wins and Alice will give them the prizes, fortunately, Alice has a box of sweets, so she distributes to all of them until it is empty and a thimble is left in her bag so she asks the Dodo to presents a thimble to her in return as a prize to herself. After that, the Mouse says that he will share his story but once he begins his story, he stops narrating and leaves because Alice isn`t paying attention to his story. All of the animals wish that the Mouse comes back while Alice wishes that Dinah, which is her cat, could return the Mouse and she starts describing to other animals how talented Dinah is in eating the birds which makes them escape far away. Alice starts to cry once again because she is alone until she hears someone is walking near her.

Analysis:

Although in the previous chapter Alice starts to feel sympathy for the Mouse when she promises him to stop talking about cats and dogs because they frighten him, she continues to do that so at the end of this chapter with the birds; she describes to them how talented her cat is in eating birds. There is only one interpretation for this deed; and that is because she thinks that if she loves anything in this world, others love that too. She doesn`t realize that her cat Dinah kills mice and birds and this is the reason that makes all animals leave her.
