Chapter 1:Down the Rabbit Hole

Summary:

Alice lies beside a riverside with her older sister. While they are sitting there, her sister starts reading a book and Alice gets bored because of this situation. Then, a White Rabbit with neat clothes appears beside them and it seems that the Rabbit is hurried and worried about being late and then he jumps into a hole that leads to a passage under the ground.  Alice chases the Rabbit rashly and falls down a deep hole that looks like a well. Alice reaches the bottom of the well and she makes her way behind the Rabbit suddenly, she finds herself in a room that is full of doors. The doors are all locked, then she sees a key on a small table inside the room. She tries to open all doors with this key but it doesn`t open anyone of them. After searching, Alice comes into a small door behind a curtain. She tries the key once again and discovers that it opens this door which leads to a passage and a garden. Although she finds the key to this door, Alice couldn`t fit through this door because it is too small. She returns to the table in the hopes of finding anything useful. She finds a bottle on the table that says "DRINK ME." Alice drinks the bottle. Then she shrinks, and she discovers she has left the key on the table far above her, even though she can now squeeze through the door. She starts crying until noticing a little cake beneath the table with the words "EAT ME" written on it. Alice eats the cake in the hopes of getting bigger but nothing occurs.

Analysis:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland starts with the scene of Alice passing off into a dream-like condition while her sister is reading a book to her. There is some evidence that proves that Alice is dreaming according to the fact that this evidence objects to the norms of reality. Firstly, the appearance of the White Rabbit with neat clothes who is talking and claiming of being late. Secondly, falling into the well with no injuries, although the well seems very deep because Alice is dropping slowly for a long time and even she starts talking to herself because she has nothing to do. Furthermore, falling into this deep well indicates that Alice is entering the deep phase in her slumber. Although there is no interpretation of the reason behind chasing the Rabbit, only the curiosity that is inside every child to investigate is what pushes Alice to follow the rabbit and she feels that he will provide her with new information. The action of chasing the Rabbit indicates that the intended goal exists, even if the conclusion is unknown. Alice`s dream focuses more on physical changes that she must shrink in order to pass into the garden and then she must grow up to get the key. Despite the fact that Alice is in a dream which is full of imagination and there is no adult to take care of her, she doesn`t forget the rules of safety and that is explicit when she assures that the bottle doesn`t contain poisons.
