Chapter 11: Who Stole the Tarts?
Summary:
This chapter begins with the scene of the court in the presence of the King and the Queen. Alice notices that twelve jurors from different creatures are wiring down on slates and comment that they are “stupid things”. The White Rabbit proceeds the trail by accusing the knave of Hearts of stealing the Queen’s tarts. The Hatter, the first witness, came in. The king asks him to provide his evidence, so the Hatter describes how poor he is by mentioning the tea party which consists only of tea and thin bread. The King wants more details, but the Hatter claims that he couldn’t remember, so he is asked to stand down. Meanwhile, Alice is growing and is noticed by the Dormouse who asks her to stop. The white Rabbit calls the next witness who is the Duchess’ cook. The cook refuses to give evidence, so the King asks her of the tart recipe. The Dormouse interrupts by saying that they are made of treacle, so he is sent out of the court. After the disappearance of the cook, the White Rabbit calls the third witness who is Alice!
Analysis:
The appearance of the court seems to be real and logical same as the court above the ground which Alice recognizes but when she zooms in, she finds that this court lacks logic. At first, when she sees the jurors holding pencils and writing on paper she is surprised by how real it is but then she finds that they only write their names and stupid things. Also, once she listens to how the king deals with the witnesses and the evidence they provide, she assures that it doesn`t have the features of a real and logical court. At the end of the chapter, Although Alice doesn`t know anything about the stealing, she becomes one of the witnesses which means that the witnesses are chosen randomly and without an orderly manner.
